One of the first questions to be asked when tackling any new analytics project is “Where’s your taxonomy?” This question catches a lot of people off guard when asked because a lot of companies don’t consider the benefits that having one will offer. This will be especially true if you work for a consulting firm, or are on a professional services team that works with many customers per year.
In my time spent with a large software company in New York City, my dig into the website taxonomy brought up thousands of outdated pages, broken links, dead ends, and hidden content that very few people even knew existed. I captured as much as I could find and transferred it all to a taxonomy tool, printed it, and put it on the wall in a large conference room so that everyone could see what a total mess it was.
