Now, you need to roll your sleeves up and get busy. When you start to gather data from what people work with, you start what I like to call data archaeology. You’re digging and poking and prodding a spreadsheet most likely, and you’re finding structures and categories and holes and gaps. This is interview process territory when you’re asking users to provide you with samples. You can also get this if you ask for and are given user-level access to the application or systems they’re using.
The best way to understand the process here is by example, and I’m going to walk you through a simple but effective one. This practice encompasses the two primary facets of UX analytics – research and analytics investigation. You do the research to uncover the data needs of the users, and then you start investigating what you’re given to find answers to the pains and challenges. These are your clues, and you must...
