The fundamentals of session facilitation are simple: be organized, be direct yet respectful, be diligent about avoiding biases, and always be watching. A great facilitator is one who can practice empathy, know when a pivot or even just a break is needed, and can articulate processes, directions, and pace to a wide variety of personality types. Being non-threatening and persuasive is the key that will unlock cooperation and collaboration with the majority of people you encounter.
You’re the leader, the coach, the arbitrator, and at times the voice of reason. You must stay impartial even if you’ve got strong opinions. Always work on team members’ ideas and help to solidify or reject them based on what the data is telling you.
