Collecting ideas and references for a short film

Now that you have an idea of what a story structure is, let us start collecting ideas and references for your short film. The duration of the short film can be anything from 1 to 20 minutes but for the purpose of this book I suggest you keep your story short, to between 1 and 2 minutes.

Collecting references and ideas is important in filmmaking because it helps filmmakers develop a clear vision for their project and provides them with inspiration and guidance. References and ideas can come from a variety of sources, such as other films, books, paintings, photographs, or personal experiences. By studying and gathering these references and ideas, you can develop a visual language, style, and tone for your project and communicate your vision effectively.
