The Switch blending mode

With the Switch blending mode, which is a commutative blending mode, the foreground and background are combined based on opacity, and operate as follows:

  • The background will become more apparent as we move nearer to 0
  • The foreground will become more obvious as we approach 1

Let us work with the Switch blending mode in practice to see how it works:

  1. Open Switch.sbs from the given Substance 3D Designer exercise files, load the Switch.sbsscn state file, then choose Plane (hi-res) from the Scene menu. Right-click with the mouse in the GRAPH window and choose View Outputs In 3D View.
  2. In the Switch.sbs Substance graph file, the Disc Shape node is connected as Foreground while the Square Shape node is connected as Background, and Blending Mode is set to Switch.
  3. Switching Foreground and Background will not affect the results because the Switch blending mode is commutative. You can adjust this blending mode with the Opacity and Cropping...
