Subnets in VPCs

Once you have deployed an Amazon VPC, subnets are how you divide the overall VPC CIDR into individual networks where resources will reside. As previously mentioned, a subnet within a VPC is bound to a single AZ. Since subnets cannot span AZs, this will have an impact on how you properly design and plan the deployment of subnets within your VPC. It is also important to know the classification of subnets that can belong to a VPC.

IP Ranges in Subnets

When creating Subnets within a VPC, there are a few options to choose from depending on the configuration of the VPC. The IP classifications that can be configured in a subnet are as follows:

  • IPv4 only: This is the most common type of subnet deployment. Resources residing in an IPv4-only subnet may only have IPv4 addressing and communicate only using IPv4.
