Lastly, this brief section of this chapter will focus on AWS Global Accelerator. AWS Global Accelerator is a service from AWS that allows leveraging the AWS global network backbone to improve and accelerate the performance of public-facing customer applications running on AWS. This service has some similarities to Amazon CloudFront in that it uses much of the same infrastructure. However, one major characteristic that separates Global Accelerator from CloudFront is that it is not restricted to HTTP-based applications, nor does it provide any caching. Amazon CloudFront’s primary purpose is content distribution, whereas AWS Global Accelerator is more like an on-ramp to AWS. The foundation behind Global Accelerator is to get global user traffic onto the AWS network as soon as possible, which has better performance, latency, and predictability compared to the public internet.
