BGP is widely considered “the protocol of the internet.” This is because BGP is responsible for the advertisement of over one million prefixes, including IPv4 and IPv6, on the public internet. BGP is not only a very extensible protocol but users also maintain a large amount of control over how prefixes are shared, which caters well to interconnecting third-party networks to each other. After all, the internet is just the largest collection of third-party networks communicating with each other.
BGP is not just limited to the internet backbone; it is also heavily used in enterprise networks. BGP may be used to connect to an internet provider, build enterprise backbones, or connect to third-party networks for business-to-business (B2B) connectivity.
