Creating a DX Connection

Before any DX circuit can be implemented, there’s a process that must be followed to order and provision the DX circuit. In this section, let’s go over the process by which a DX connection is created.

Direct Connect Location

The very first decision to make when ordering a DX circuit is the physical location to which the circuit will be delivered. A DX is a physical infrastructure component, so it is tied to a physical location. The data centers where AWS offers Direct Connect are usually partner collocated data centers in which AWS has its own infrastructure. The Direct Connect connection can be delivered as a cross-connection directly from AWS to customer equipment, or through an AWS Direct Connect partner. The reasons for using a partner are usually twofold:

  • The partner offers sub-rate connectivity if the customer does not require (or cannot afford) the fully committed DX rates
