Observability and Monitoring

Effective protection requires visibility, but too much information can make it hard to identify what matters. In this section, you’ll explore tools that allow you to search for items of interest, tools to report, tools to remediate, and tools to automate. Gathering relevant logs and events, then surfacing and responding to what’s important, is the art and science of observability.

When faced with a visibility question, consider three key points: what you need to see, how you’ll find it, and what you plan to do with the information. Start by identifying what you’re looking for—this could include traffic events, performance issues, or security incidents. Then, think about how you’ll gather this information by selecting the right tools or services. Finally, determine what actions to take with the information—whether simply reporting findings or addressing any issues you discover.
