At a high level, an AWS TGW is a managed AWS router that can connect many different AWS networking constructs together in a hub-and-spoke topology. AWS realized that VPC peering had scale limits and manual route management issues and that the virtual private gateway construct lacked sufficient routing control and intelligence as well. The cloud-native connectivity constructs were proving unable to deal with the demands of businesses that wanted better connectivity options for critical applications. AWS introduced TGW to provide a managed, scalable, performant network construct able to deal with the challenges posed by increased user complexity.
TGW also extends routing intelligence by providing multiple route tables and simplifying the exchange of routes across resources connected to it.
