Optimizing AWS Networks via Traffic Reduction

The word optimization is a broad term meaning “to make better and more efficient.” In terms of networking, there are several ways to optimize a network, such as the following:

  • Decrease the number of intermediate hops between two endpoints.
  • Increase the speed and bandwidth of the network.
  • Simplify the network complexity.
  • Send as little traffic across the network as required to meet business objectives.

In previous chapters, the focus has been on the first three items in the list as they tend to have the most impact on network optimization. The last option in the list, however, involves minimizing the amount of traffic being sent across the network, which in turn minimizes data transfer costs and bandwidth charges.
