AWS offers four types of LBs, each with distinct features tailored to specific use cases.
The ALB operates at the application layer (layer 7) and provides advanced routing capabilities, including path and host-based routing, making it ideal for microservices and modern web applications.
The NLB functions at the network and transport layers (layers 3 and 4) and is designed for high-performance, low-latency applications, capable of handling millions of requests per second while maintaining ultra-low latencies.
The GLB integrates with third-party virtual appliances, simplifying the deployment, scaling, and management of these appliances by enabling seamless insertion into your network traffic flow.
Finally, the CLB, which is now deprecated, provided basic load balancing across multiple EC2 instances, operating at both the application and transport layers, but has since been superseded by the more feature-rich ALB and NLB.
