Fundamental to any discussion about cloud security is an understanding of the customer’s and cloud provider’s responsibilities, and where they differ, which is referred to as the shared responsibility model. The scope of responsibility between the customer and provider changes depending on what type of cloud service is being used.
Cloud services can be broadly categorized into three service models: software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), or infrastructure as a service (IaaS).
The shared responsibility model for SaaS services places most of the security responsibility on the provider. In the case of SaaS, Amazon (or a third-party SaaS provider) handles everything except for IAM and data protection. Examples of SaaS would be Amazon WorkDocs and hosted WordPress.
