Put it all together and we see the cities of the future with millions of newly-equipped autonomous vehicles on the road within a few years. In the San Francisco Bay Area, it already is very common to have two or three Teslas around you, with a Cruise from General Motors or a Waymo driving nearby, too. These are all like little “data bubbles.” Each can see a couple of hundred meters around the car, building a 3D model, and their AI systems convert all that into component parts, like lane markings, stop signs, other cars, and pedestrians. These data bubbles soon will enable very detailed new maps, and bring radical changes to our cities as parking spaces get converted into drop-off zones, among other changes. Not to mention that we’ll be wearing Spatial Computing glasses to summon new services from rides to food delivery because of the autonomous vehicles on the road.
