As anyone who has worked in a corporate organization can tell you, one of the first stops when you get a new job is the company’s HR department. There is a terrific amount of work that an HR department does for a company, but it usually flies under the radar of most workers since its touchpoints are seemingly on the periphery of what is considered to be the main company business.
However, if a company’s HR department is lax and careless, workers will inevitably suffer―from minor issues such as losing an accounting of a vacation day or two to losing large sums of money due to sloppy equity options paperwork.
A company’s culture is usually governed by its HR department. Empathy, diversity, and sexual harassment training come under its purview. Official workplace safety is another area. If there are problems in these areas, upper management and HR are the first entities to be blamed.
