How do we, as responsible human beings, navigate between protecting our digital privacy and garnering the benefits that could be received by sharing data, both on an individual and wider societal level?
This question cannot be answered in a general way; the actual context in which data is being asked for is extremely relevant to answering it. And then, operationally speaking, it will take some kind of body of peers to ensure what has been decided would be appropriate for human social good.
We spoke with Dan Ariely, James B. Duke Professor of Behavioral Economics at Duke University, about these very issues. The way to think about human decision-making, from his perspective, is that human beings are not rational from a practical and behavioral perspective, but rather irrational, rife with biases and blind spots.
