To get an idea of how deeply cities can change in a decade, we walked around old Barcelona, Spain in November 2019. Every store accepted Apple Pay. Taxis worked like Uber. We were guided by AR on Google Maps down streets that were hundreds of years old. Apple has a store here. Every restaurant had tons of reviews and you could get reservations at many online. None of that existed in 2010.
Some cities, like Rome or Milan, will be harder to automate because of their lack of painted lines on streets, their much more chaotic pedestrian traffic, and unusual parking and traffic arrangements. Expect even these cities to see big improvements due to AR glasses and the data collection from those and autonomous vehicles, however.
We asked many people who are building these technologies how cities would change in the future due to Spatial Computing technologies like robots, autonomous vehicles, and AR glasses.
