Color correction and grading

Color correction forms the basis for color grading. Color correction aims to produce realistic colors, as close as possible to how they look in real life. Color grading is when the editor creates a color styling with a look and feel that represents the theme of the video.

Adjusting temperature, tint, and hue

Temperature, tint, and hue are three terms used in video editing to describe different aspects of color correction and grading:

  • Temperature refers to the color temperature and is measured in Kelvin (K). A lower color temperature, such as 2,800K, will give an image a warmer, yellow-orange tone, while a higher color temperature, such as 6,500K, will give a cooler, blue tone. Adjusting the temperature of an image can be used to create a specific mood or correct unwanted color casts caused by lighting or camera settings.
  • Tint refers to the balance between the green and magenta hues in an image. A green tint is caused by an excess of green...
