The theory of color for video is based on the understanding that colors can be created through the mixing of different primary colors. This has been understood since the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the first to configure our understanding of color. But the modern system of color theory, which is based on HSL, was not developed until just over 100 years ago.
Color influences the audience’s perception of a video just as much as music, though in a more subtle way. Music stands out and is immediately noticeable. The color scheme of a video is just as important to set the mood but is less noticeable. As an extreme example, consider the movie The Wizard of Oz. Think of the bright colors when Dorothy landed in Oz and the euphoria you felt when you first watched the scene, which was emphasized further by the switch from black and white.
