Grayboxing the map

The second step for creating maps, especially ones that require a balance between both sides of the map, is to graybox your map. We briefly discussed grayboxing in the Grayboxing the props recipe of Chapter 6, but to recap, grayboxing is where you block out the map with very simplistic shapes and little to no detail.

In this recipe, we will be using primitive parts to graybox the walls and roofs around our previously created paths. After the initial main walls have been constructed, we will then go through and add extruding pillars on the walls, which will help create a less flat environment and provide the players with more cover.

How to do it…

In this recipe, we will block out the map along the paths that we created in the Planning your layout recipe using square parts.
