According to Ty Kiisel, writing in his article, Are Deadlines Important? published on www.Forbes.com, based on research he did on www.history.net, author Christine Ammer wrote that the "first written record of the word deadline appeared in an 1864 report by Col. D.T. Chandler."Kiisel continues to say, "However another report to Col. Chandler from a Captain Walter Bowie, describes the seriousness of a deadline. He describes a line inside Andersonville Prison, inmates could not cross. 'On the inside of the stockade and twenty feet from it there is a deadline established, over which no prisoner is allowed to go, day or night, under penalty of being shot.'"
No wonder the word deadline still makes most of us quake in our boots!
