One of the indicators of workaholism, as well as having a life that is lacking in work-life balance, is the reluctance and even the inability to take a vacation, especially if your company offers you at least one week of paid vacation time each year. There is, of course, a wide range in how much paid vacation various types of workers get from as low as just the national holidays to a week or two or as much as Portugal and Austria, the countries that are tied for the highest number of vacation days a year, with workers in each country getting 22 paid days. By contrast, as author Alexander Hess points out, in his USA today article "The United States is the only developed country in the world without a single legally required paid vacation day or holiday. By law, every country in the European Union has at least four work weeks of paid vacation."
