Assigning Azure Roles to Enable Microsoft Entra ID Login to Azure Virtual Machines

While Entra ID provides user authentication to resources, Azure RBAC controls access permissions on the virtual machine (VM). Assigning the correct roles ensures users can leverage Entra ID credentials for secure VM access.

Two primary methods exist to enable Entra ID login for VMs. The first method is during VM creation. When creating a new Windows VM in the Azure portal, you can enable the Login with Microsoft Entra ID option in the Microsoft Entra ID section on the Management tab. This option, shown in Figure 8.13, automatically configures the new VM for Entra ID login.
