Creating App Roles

In Microsoft Entra ID, an app role is a custom attribute associated with an application registration that defines a set of permissions or capabilities for users to access.

Think of an app role as a label that identifies a user’s permission level within an application. App roles are used to grant specific privileges to users, such as the following:

  • Admin: A high-level admin role with full access to the application
  • Editor: A lower-level role with editing permissions but not full administrative rights
  • Viewer: A read-only role that allows users to view data but not modify it

When a user is assigned to an app role, their permissions are automatically updated in the application.

To create an app role, use the following steps:

  1. Navigate to an app registration.
  2. Under Manage, select App roles.
