Pass-through authentication (PTA) is a type of sign-in method where cloud authentication requests are processed by on-premises domain controllers. For organizations that aren’t able to or don’t want to deploy PHS, PTA is an alternative that minimizes the amount of on-premises infrastructure needed for authenticating requests and helps honor things such as password policies.
Exam tip
One of the benefits of PTA over a solution such as federation is that PTA only requires outbound connectivity from the servers running the pass-through authentication agent. Like federation, however, PTA depends on the availability of on-premises infrastructure to process user logons. If the on-premises infrastructure isn’t available, then users will be unable to log onto the service.
