What gets in your way and what to do about it


If you look back at your self-assessment, any one of these habits can lead to problems and interfere with the success of your listening. Let's take each habit and both translate more precisely what it is and then identify some specific actions you can take away to improve your listening.

Solution for habit 1– find at least one thing of interest

You might notice signs of people being not interested more when you are the speaker. People doze, they doodle, they even text when in a presentation, business meeting and even during one-to-one communication. We often just shut down our listening when we are not interested.

Yes, the speaker can do some things in this situation. But as a listener, you should try to work with the speaker.

Ask yourself, "Is there anything at all I can use?". Can you listen for a new word? Is it possible that you can discover a new interest or take-away if you listen? The key is to tune in until you find something you can go with...
