Let us begin our review with an overview of the cellular IoT device architecture shown in Figure 6.1:

At a high level, a cellular IoT device includes a processing unit that runs the device application, an LTE/5G cellular module with the SIM and RF, a power unit for managing the battery and/or energy harvesting (such as solar or thermoelectric), various sensors, and digital/analog inputs and outputs. It could also integrate WLAN radios such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and/or LR-WPAN, which we covered in Chapter 3, Introducing IoT Wireless Technologies. Let us examine each of these architecture blocks in more detail.
