Implementing Cellular IoT Solutions for Digital Transformation
By :

As of 2022, LTE based on at least the 3GPP Release 8 standard has been deployed in licensed spectrum in over 170 countries, with over 530 cellular carriers; however, the LTE MTC (including LTE-M and NB-IoT) part of the 3GPP Release 13 standard has only been deployed in 74 countries, with 170 cellular carriers. Unlike standard LTE (LTE Cat 1), the cellular LPWA LTE-M and NB-IoT technologies are not as ubiquitous globally, with some countries deploying only LTE-M, only NB-IoT, or both. This is a key consideration for global enterprise IoT solutions, which we will discuss later in this chapter when we review LTE LPWA best practices and network coverage.
We covered the high-level LTE network architecture in Chapter 2, Understanding IoT Devices and Architectures, including how user equipment (UE) or IoT devices access the LTE network via the LTE eNodeB Radio Access Network (RAN). We also reviewed the elements of the LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC), which validates the...
