Let’s begin our review of 5G with an overview of the 5G network architecture, including the 5G network deployment options. We will conclude our overview with a review of the 5G radio technology and frequency spectrum as well as service-based architecture (SBA) slicing, supporting unique 5G IoT use cases.
Most of the 5G NR network deployments today use what is called a Non Standalone (NSA) architecture where the LTE network Evolved Packet Core (EPC) is used for the control plane data, with 5G used for the user plane data. The control plane manages how data packets are forwarded, whereas the data plane actually carries the user traffic. These networks are typically planned to evolve to a Standalone (SA) architecture with both user and control plane data on a dedicated 5G core. These network architectures are shown in Figure 5.2:
