Each IoT WLAN and WWAN technology uses specific network topologies, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each topology. For example, mesh topologies used with many Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) and recent WLAN technology releases have the main advantage of network resiliency where the failure of one device does not disrupt connectivity due to redundant connections. The disadvantages of a mesh topology are the complexity of the network and device setup, as well as latency issues in traversing the network. In the case of star topologies used in cellular and WLAN technologies, the main advantages are reliability, efficiency, and centralized network management.
