Regardless of the IoT use case, the basic architecture shown in Figure 2.1 applies. At a high level, all IoT solutions have a device component for collecting the relevant IoT data which includes sensor data such as location, temperature, acceleration, flow, or other remote monitoring information. This data is typically transmitted using various wireless technologies, such as Wi-Fi or cellular, to an IP gateway using specific messaging protocols to the IoT platform and application across an IP-based network. Most IoT solutions also require two-way communication from the IoT application to change, for example, the device configuration or affect a change to an actuator on a machine. To explore the components of this high-level architecture in more detail, let us look at the five-layer IoT protocol stack shown in Figure 2.2.
