In this section, let’s review a brief history of cellular technology, beginning with the introduction of analog (1G) cellular phones in 1979 and continuing up to modern smartphones in the 2020s, as shown in the following chart.

Cellular phones have driven the evolution of cellular network technology globally, starting with analog voice calls in the 1980s, transitioning to digital voice calls and basic data services with 2G and 3G technologies over the following 20 years, and eventually true smartphones with high bandwidth Internet Protocol (IP) mobile broadband applications, since roughly 2010.
