As discussed in Chapter 5, Validating 5G with the IoT, 5G is the next generation cellular technology to follow LTE with the initial 5G carrier deployments being Non-Standalone (NSA) and using the existing LTE core network. As we reviewed in Chapter 5, Validating 5G with the Io, to realize the full benefits of 5G in IoT solutions with low latency, high reliability, and high peak data rates tailored to the IoT application, the 5G carrier deployments need to be migrated to the Standalone (SA) architecture. In parallel with the current 5G network carrier deployments in the licensed 5G spectrum, there are a growing number of both LTE and 5G private network deployments in the Citizen Band Radio Service (CBRS) bands from 3.5 GHz to 3.7 GHz, also known as LTE band 48.
