To begin our exploration of IoT wireless technologies, it is important to understand the difference between licensed versus unlicensed wireless spectrum. Unlicensed spectrum is public wireless spectrum that can be used by organizations without getting permission from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US or the governing wireless regulatory body in the deployment region globally. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) designated Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) unlicensed frequency bands for many uses beyond telecommunication. Examples of IoT technologies that use unlicensed spectrum or ISM bands include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Long Range (LoRa), and Thread, as well as other proprietary technologies.
