Overview of this book

This book starts at the beginning by introducing programming through easy to use examples with the Swift Playgrounds app. Kids are regularly encouraged to explore and play with new concepts to support knowledge acquisition and retention – these newly learned skills can then be used to express their own unique ideas. Children will be shown how to create their first iOS application and build their very own movie night application.

Summary

In this chapter, you learned about an important building block that can be used with any application. We also looked at how to associate values with words that can be used throughout our application. These words are better known as variables. By learning what a variable is and how we can create them, we learned how to utilize a very important piece in creating an iOS application. Consider it your first major step!

Our next step, which will be covered in the next chapter, is learning what types are. In this chapter, we briefly went through what a String value looks like, but we will cover this topic in detail in subsequent chapters. We will cover what String means and how exactly we create String values.
