Inkscape 0.48 Illustrator's Cookbook

Certain projects will require strict adherence to a specific color theme. In these cases, creating a new palette might be overkill, so Inkscape lets us specify custom swatches and save them along with our drawings.
Swatches also support gradients: another advantage over color palettes. These features can be of great assistance when producing websites or promotional material that requires a coherent look and feel.
Open the Swatches dialogue (Shift + Ctrl + W). Switch the color palette from Inkscape default to Auto. You can also use the small button with the a black arrowhead pointing left, on the right of the currently selected swatch.
The following steps will show you how to create a custom color swatch:
1. Create a small rectangle in the center of the page.
2. Bring up the Fill and Stroke (Shift + Ctrl + F) dialog, set the Fill to Flat color and choose a color from the HSL color picker. Adjust the H, S, L, and A settings...
