Overview of this book

The book begins by giving you a brief introduction to setting up your NAV environment and shows you how to install and configure it according to your requirements. You will then dive deep into the latest design patterns, network architecture, and topologies. We will show you how you can integrate NAV with the Microsoft platform, and secure your deployment by managing roles and permissions. Moving on, we will explain how to monitor and manage server instances using the Administration tool. We’ll discuss how you can take advantage of the expanded extensibility and connectivity capabilities for a tighter integration with the cloud as well as handheld devices. Then, we’ll show you how you can make use of the PowerBI capabilities that have been built into Dynamics NAV. By the end of the book, you will be confident in developing and administering a Dynamics NAV implementation that will leverage all of the new features.

Visual Studio Code (Development Environment)

In order to design the system and extension using the new Development environment, you must install Visual Studio Code first. You can find Visual Studio Code at https://code.visualstudio.com/.

You also need Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 for this development environment. The following screenshot shows Visual Studio Code:

Here, it is easy to create the extensions using this tool effectively. The following are some of the attractive features that you will get with Visual Studio Code:

  • Built-in Git command for version control
  • Intelligent code completion (IntelliSense)
  • Better code navigation and refactoring
  • Debug code right from the Editor (streamlined debugging)
  • Add extensions to boost your Visual Studio Code experience

After you integrate Dynamics NAV with Visual Studio Code, you can directly open the extension folder in Visual Studio Code by right-clicking on it. The following screenshot shows how close the language is to the C/AL code:
