There can be situations where you would need to add additional uplinks (physical NICs) for a vSphere Standard Switch. Such an addition is generally done with the intention of enabling the use of teaming and load balancing features.
You can present the uplinks to the vSphere Standard Switch either by using the vSphere Web Client GUI or by using the esxcfg-vswitch
command.
The following procedure explains how to add an uplink to an existing vSwitch by using the vSphere Web Client:
Select the ESXi host from the inventory, navigate to Manage | Networking | Virtual switches, and select the vSwitch to which you want to add an uplink (vmnic).
With the vSwitch selected, click on the manage physical adapters icon:
In the Manage Physical Network Adapters for vSwitch window, click on the green + icon to bring up the Add Physical Adapters to the Switch window:
