If the array backing the LUNs is not VASA capable, then the vSphere administrator can create user-defined storage capabilities. This allows the administrator to manually check the storage properties of the LUN and create a capability matching the same.
The following procedure explains how to create user-defined storage capabilities:
From the inventory Home, click on VM Storage Profiles, which should take you to the storage profiles administration page:
On the VM Storage Profiles screen, click on the icon with a wrench on it to bring up the Manage Storage Capabilities window:
In the Manage Storage Capabilities window, click on the green + icon to bring up the Create Storage Capability window:
In the Create Storage Capacity window, supply a name and description for the capability:
The newly-created user-defined storage capability will be listed along with the provider's list of capabilities:
