Chapter 4. Improving Application Performance

Even if our Notes application lacks many details, at this point, we are using a number of key components of the Cloud Platform, and so it can be considered a fully fledged web application. This is a good opportunity to stop adding major features and trying to delve into some implementation details involving Datastore, Memcache, and the Modules service in order to optimize application performance.

While going through this chapter, we have to take into consideration how optimizing a web application running on a pay-per-use service such as App Engine is crucial both to maximize performance and lower costs.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Gain a deeper knowledge of Datastore: properties, queries, caching, indexing and administration
  • How to store transient data into Memcache
  • How to structure our application with the help of the Modules service
