Understanding compute

The compute architecture is supported by the servers in the scale unit that are running Windows Server 2019 Standard or Datacenter edition. These Windows Servers then form Hyper-V clusters. Sitting on top of these Hyper-V clusters are the Compute Resource Provider and the Azure Guest Agent. Running on the Compute Resource Provider are the VMs, VM Extensions, and Platform Images, which can all be controlled from the Azure Resource Manager (ARM), as shown in the following diagram:

The Compute Resource Provider allows Microsoft Azure Stack Hub tenants to create their own virtual machines. This includes the ability to create virtual machine extensions along with the virtual machines. The orchestrator component is responsible for locating the correct host to run the VM on.
