Are you confused about the scope of the DRP and the BCP? Well, don't worry because that is very common. In fact, a quick search on the topic will show you that even authors don't agree on the boundaries of those two terms; however, let me try to make it as simple as possible.

The differences between the BCP and the DRP are as follows:

  • The DRP can be considered as a subset of the overall BCP.
  • The DRP is about restoring a critical server in the case of a disaster (reactive).
  • The BCP is about preventing business downtime (proactive).
  • The BCP is business-related (processes), while the DRP is more IT-related (systems and data).
  • The BCP can be applied during normal operations to prevent disruptions, while DRP is just executed if there is a disaster.
