In this chapter, we’re going to dip a toe into the exciting world of observability. While you’ve probably heard that observability is currently one of the hottest fields in IT, you may be wondering what it is, and how Grafana supports it. Here is a definition of observability from Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_observability):
“In distributed systems, observability is the ability to collect data about program execution, internal states of modules, and communication between components.”
This is a little bit abstract, so let me offer my refinement:
Observability is the practice of collecting metrics data from telemetered systems, scanning, detecting, and alerting on anomalous behavior, and distributing state metrics at an appropriate frequency for analysis.
