Kubernetes has emerged as the de facto standard for container orchestration, with recent developments making it easy to deploy and handle a Kubernetes cluster. To address these issues, Amazon EKS offers a managed Kubernetes service to improve the performance, scalability, reliability, and availability of AWS infrastructure and integrate with AWS networking and security services with ease. You’ll begin by exploring the fundamentals of Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon EKS, and its architecture along with different ways to set up EKS. Next, you’ll find out how to manage Amazon EKS, encompassing security, cluster authentication, networking, and cluster version upgrades. As you advance, you’ll discover best practices and learn to deploy applications on Amazon EKS through different use cases, including pushing images to ECR and setting up storage and load balancing. With the help of several actionable practices and scenarios, you’ll gain the know-how to resolve scaling and monitoring issues. Finally, you will overcome the challenges in EKS by developing the right skill set to troubleshoot common issues with the right logic. Summary

In this chapter, we explored how we can use ECR to store, cache, and replicate container images. Using ECR comes at a cost, which is made up of the total size of all images in your repository and egress costs, but by using the scan-on-push capability of ECR we can identify and resolve critical dependencies as well as optimize the size of the image, supporting a better security posture and more cost-effective images.

There are also more advanced features of ECR that allow us to support a DR strategy or deploy applications across multiple regions using cross-region replication as well as caching public images from the ECR public repositories or Quay. Finally, we looked at how you can configure IAM and repository policies to control access to the images inside and pull those images into EKS.

In the next chapter, we will look at how you can use the AWS storage driver to provide stateful storage to Pods as a source of your applications and Pods.
