We have discussed the various elements of an effective network management approach. In this section, we will lay out the following guidelines for drafting a network management strategy for effective operations of an organization:

• Identify the network requirements and decide on an in-band approach or an OOB network management.
• Build standard configuration templates for common configuration across all devices on the network such as AAA, IPSLA, syslog, security, and common services. Disable any unnecessary features that are not required on the network devices. Use standard hostname conventions that can be used for effective parsing of the SNMP traps and syslog messages.
