Running AVD on Azure Stack HCI

Ever since AVD was introduced, IT admins have been able to run AVD in the cloud. This makes it possible for companies to provide a virtual desktop to end-users regardless of their location. However, a lot of companies have an on-premises VDI environment and can’t move it to Azure for several reasons:

  • Companies or organizations such as hospitals and governments are bound by geo boundaries and can’t let their data leave their country or wider geopolitical area
  • They have applications that are very sensitive to latency

Before we look at the benefits of the solution, let’s have a look at what the solution is. Azure Stack HCI is a hyperconverged infrastructure, meaning that it combines the OS, storage, and networking. These devices can be bought from several manufacturers, such as Dell, HP, and Lenovo. A big advantage of these devices is that they can be managed in the Azure portal.
